The first of the three canticles of the Divine Comedy, Inferno describes the experience of Dante Alighieri in hell, during his imaginary journey in the afterlife: the course examines selected cantos of this medieval literary masterpiece on human frailty, the power of religion, politics, poetry and love.

The course -- for students who have completed at least 3 courses in Italian -- focuses on the reading of selected cantos from the Divine Comedy and the preparation of a play to be recited for the audience of the Center.

Selections from contemporary Italian authors of poetry and narrative. Each session consists of brief lectures, readings, and class discussions based on assigned works. The literary texts are examined within their historical and cultural context and for what they communicate to today’s readers.

For students of all levels, a course designed to explore some major buildings and the urban landscapes of Italy. Cities such as Venice, Rome and Florence will be the focus of special attention, as we take a detailed view at their emblematic monuments, the squares, the different neighborhoods, and the buildings (religious and secular). The course wants to explain how these elements express bonds between people, and above all how they originate spaces charged with memories of many generations of city-dwellers. In English

Cultural readings, historical documents, literature and films are examined in this course and considered as parallel paths that bring us to discover the various portraits, often contradictory, of contemporary Italian society. Films are in Italian with English subtitles.
