Italian Cities: Art, History, Urbanism

For students of all levels, a course designed to explore some major buildings and the urban landscapes of Italy.
We shall discuss what human needs those urban landscapes satisfied in the past, what sensory experiences they evoke today. Cities such as Venice, Rome and Florence will be the focus of special attention, as we take a detailed view at their emblematic monuments, the squares, the different neighborhoods, the buildings (religious and secular).
The course wants to explain how these elements express bonds between people, and above all how they originate spaces charged with memories of many generations of city-dwellers. Elements dating from different periods coexist and fuse in such landscapes, in a unique blend revealing the beauty and harmony of Italian cities to our appreciation.
